STEM fields have a reputation problem when it comes to inclusion. The numbers on gender and racial diversity are well-documented and disappointing. The numbers on LGBTQ+ representation are harder to come by — most STEM departments don’t track sexual orientation or gender identity — but the lived experience of queer students in these fields tells a consistent story: you can be out, but it’s rarely easy, and the culture doesn’t always make space for it.
The “Science Is Objective” Myth
One of the distinguishing features of STEM culture is the belief — sometimes explicit, usually implicit — that science and engineering are purely objective pursuits where identity doesn’t matter. The work is about data, equations, and code, not about who you love or how you identify. In this framing, bringing up LGBTQ+ identity feels like introducing something irrelevant into a space that prides itself on relevance.
“The message I got, over and over, was that being gay had nothing to do with physics,” said Elena, a PhD candidate in a top-ten physics program. “Which is true in one sense — the laws of thermodynamics don’t care about my sexuality. But the people in my department do, and pretending otherwise didn’t make the isolation go away.”
This “identity doesn’t matter here” framing has consequences. When departments don’t acknowledge that their students have identities, they don’t build infrastructure to support those identities. No LGBTQ+ mentorship programs. No pronoun policies. No acknowledgment that the department’s culture might be unwelcoming in ways that affect retention.
The Specific Challenges
LGBTQ+ STEM students report several recurring experiences:
The “only one” phenomenon. In small departments — and most STEM departments outside the largest research universities are small — there may be only one or two out LGBTQ+ students at any given time. This creates pressure: you’re not just a student; you’re a representative. Every interaction carries the weight of potentially shaping how your department views queer people in general.
Fieldwork and conference travel. STEM fields often involve travel to field sites, conferences, or collaborating labs — sometimes in locations or countries that are actively hostile to LGBTQ+ people. A geology student mapping terrain in a rural area, a computer science student presenting at a conference in a country where homosexuality is criminalized, a biology student doing fieldwork in a remote location with a small team — all of these situations involve calculations about safety and visibility that straight, cisgender students don’t have to make.
The advisor relationship. In STEM, the advisor-advisee relationship is particularly intense. Lab groups often function as small families, with the advisor as the head. If the advisor isn’t supportive — or worse, is actively hostile — there’s often no alternative lab to transfer to within the same specialty. “My advisor has literally never mentioned anything about LGBTQ+ issues, positively or negatively, in three years,” said Marcus, a mechanical engineering PhD student. “I have no idea what he thinks, and at this point I’m not going to ask.”
Industry pipeline concerns. STEM students thinking about industry careers face the same geographic calculus as other LGBTQ+ job seekers, amplified by the concentration of STEM jobs in specific regions. A software engineer may find abundant, well-paying jobs in San Francisco but few in affirming environments outside major tech hubs.
What’s Changing
Despite the challenges, LGBTQ+ visibility in STEM is growing, driven by several developments:
Professional organizations are stepping up. oSTEM (Out in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) has chapters on hundreds of campuses and runs an annual conference that’s become a critical networking and community-building event for LGBTQ+ STEM students and professionals. Professional societies in physics, chemistry, and engineering have established LGBTQ+ committees and programming.
Role models are becoming more visible. The number of out LGBTQ+ faculty in STEM fields is growing, though it remains small. For students, having even one out professor in their department — or seeing an out scientist give a colloquium — can be transformative. “I didn’t know there were queer people in my field until I saw a speaker list an acknowledgment of their partner in their presentation,” said Priya, a chemistry major. “It was one sentence at the end of an hour-long talk, and it changed everything for me.”
Student organizing is having an impact. LGBTQ+ STEM student groups have successfully advocated for pronoun policies in labs, inclusive language in department communications, and LGBTQ+ mentorship programs. These changes are slow and incremental, but they accumulate.
For the students doing the work — the ones organizing oSTEM chapters, asking their departments to add pronouns to email signatures, being the first out person their advisors have ever supervised — the motivation is simple: make it easier for the next person. Every out STEM student is, whether they want to be or not, a door opener. The students coming behind them will walk through doors that didn’t exist before.
